June 5 Karner Blue Butterfly Walk. Join Wildlife Preserve & Park Director Sarah Clarkin in the field as she talks about the endangered Karner blue butterfly and some of the other interesting species that depend upon this geological area. Participants will take a 0.85 mile walk along a trail and spend time in a Karner blue butterfly habitat restoration area looking for this special butterfly. Learn about the butterfly's habitat, life cycle, the threats confronting its survival, and the actions underway to save it. 10-11:30am. Old Gick Farm. June 12 Andrew Wyeth: An American Legacy. Exhibit opens today. Works include pencil, watercolor, dry brush and tempera works, and will feature sections devoted to early coastal watercolors and landscape paintings, as well as a look at Wyeth’s models, his interest in vernacular architecture, and his connection to both the Regionalist tradition and Magic Realism. The core of the exhibition will comprise approximately thirty works from the Farnsworth Art Museum, in Rockport, Maine, including early Maine watercolors, highly finished tempera paintings, and other major works including The Hyde’s own Wyeth watercolor – The Ledge and the Island, 1937- as well as works on loan from museums and private collections. Gary Zack, 38 Van Dam St. Gary works in blown glass in this studio. Anne Francey, 81 State St. Anne’s paintings and drawings are abstractions that are often inspired by nature. HISTORIC BATTLEFIELD BIKE TOUR.A self-guided, 10 mile Battlefield Tour Road is open to cyclists from April 1st until mid-November. It has a multi-use lane for bicycle and pedestrian use. There are 10 wayside exhibit stops along the tour road. Take advantage of the fantastic Cell Phone Tour feature. It is easier than ever to connect to the stories preserved and told at the Battlefield using your cell phone. At each of the 10 tour road stops, call 665-8185. CONGRESS PARK CAROUSEL
The Congress Park Carousel was carved by Marcus Illions in 1910. It is the only two-row Illions carousel that remains intact. It has 28 horses with real horsehair tails. In 1987, when the Kaydeross Park amusement park closed, local citizens raised $120,000 to save the carousel. It was restored by the Saratoga Springs Public Works Department and reopened in 2002 in a new building designed by Saratoga architect John Muse. Open weekends until the end of June. ULYSSES S. GRANT COTTAGE Now open to the public.
In this Adirondack Cottage Gen. Ulysses S. Grant died of throat cancer on July 23, 1885. President Grant arrived at the cottage on June 16, 1885, with a large entourage of family, friends, servants, and physicians in order to complete his memoirs. He died just four days after his final proofreading. Today, the cottage and its furnishings remain essentially the same as during the Grant family's stay for six weeks in 1885. Visitors tour the downstairs of the cottage, viewing the original furnishings and decorations, personal items belonging to Grant, the bed where he died, and floral arrangements that remain from Grant's August 4th funeral.
