Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site

Located about 35 miles south of The Gideon Putnam in Albany, NY, the stately Schuyler Mansion was once home to Revolutionary War general, U.S. Senator and prominent businessman Philip J. Schuyler. The mansion was the site of military strategizing and political gatherings in the years that the Schuyler family occupied the house, and it also served as the site for the marriage between Elizabeth Schuyler and Alexander Hamilton in 1780. Though the original mansion was burned by the British during their occupation, it was rebuilt after their surrender using salvaged materials from the ruins, such as glass, nails, locks and hinges. The home remains without running water or electricity, offering a remarkably authentic glimpse into 18th-century life. Daily tours are available for both school and adult groups.

Ulysses S. Grant Cottage State Historic Site

Just nine miles from downtown Saratoga Springs, the U.S. Grant Cottage State Historic Site is the final home of Ulysses S. Grant, Civil War Commanding General and 18th President of the United States. Grant moved into the cottage on June 16, 1885, just weeks before his death on July 23. During that time, he completed Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant, considered one of the most critically acclaimed presidential and military memoirs in American history. Today, visitors can tour the cottage’s main floor, which remains preserved with original furnishings, décor and personal items — including the bed where Grant died and floral arrangements from his funeral.
