Environmental Management

  • Food Waste - May 2018 we installed an Aerobic Food Digester in our Kitchen.
    • The two years prior, we diverted 56 tons of food from the landfill for compost.
  • Recycling - we have a zero-sort recycling program for Guestrooms, Public Spaces, and Back of House. We divert 25-30 tons of recycling waste from the landfill each year.
  • Clean the World Program (recycling guestroom soap and shampoo into hygiene kits) - to date, we have collected 4,000 lbs of waste, resulting in nearly 12,650 bars of new soap and 3,100 bottles of shampoo redistributed to hygiene kits.
  • Biofuel - we installed a 200 gallon kitchen waste oil containment unit. Approximately 60 gallons per month are collected from us, and converted to biofuel.
  • Installed two Tesla and one Universal Electric Vehicle charging stations.
  • Per law, we recycle waste paint, bulbs, ballasts, batteries, electronic waste... plus printer toner cartridges, plastic PDE4 film, wine corks, holiday lights, and even guitar strings when we had a week-long guitar camp at the hotel.
  • In 2017, we recycled 1,500 lbs of uniforms, banquet linens, sheets, towels, and blankets.
  • Diverted 600+ guestroom pillows from the landfill. Through donation, many of those pillows will be re-purposed into filling for dog beds.
  • Donated 1,000 lbs of sheets, towels, and blankets to The Giving Circle for Hurricanes Harvey & Irma relief.
  • In every guestroom, water conservation and linen re-use cards encourage water savings.
  • Installed a water bottle filling station in the conference center.

Community Involvement

  • Since taking over management of The Gideon Putnam in 2008, Delaware North has given more than $225,000 worth of in-kind donations to local and Buffalo-based charitable organizations. We also sponsor our Park Partners: SPAC, Home Made Theater, Opera Saratoga, National Museum of Dance, Saratoga Automobile Museum, NYS Recreation and Park Society, Parks & Trails NY.
  • Each year The Gideon Putnam hosts an Earth Day event for local middle school students. We partner with Saratoga Spa State Park, taste the famous mineral springs, we plant a pine tree, and enjoy a healthy lunch in Putnam's Restaurant.

Facilities and Asset Protection

  • Delaware North has committed $20M toward capital improvements of both The Gideon Putnam and Roosevelt Baths & Spa.
  • In 2016, we renovated our Ballroom/Conference Center, and recycled more than 4,500 sq. ft. of ceiling tile, through Armstrong World Industries, and 6,880 pounds of post-consumer carpeting through Shaw Industries.
  • In the conference bathrooms, we got rid of paper towels and installed Dyson blade hand dryers.
  • In 2017-18, we renovated corridors and guestrooms, and recycled all carpeting.
  • In 2018, post-basement flood, we recycled 40,460 lbs of scrap metal.
  • We continue to install energy-efficient HVAC units on an as-needed basis.
  • We have switched most of our lighting to LED.
