BUSINESS - DELAWARE NORTH PROMISES UPGRADES AT GIDEON PUTNAM
10 March 2008
Patrons and future visitors of the famed Gideon Putnam Resort can expect to see some changes to the historic property as Delaware North Companies & Resorts, in partnership with Saratoga Gaming and Raceway, took over hospitality management at the hotel as of January 1, 2008.
The company will be overseeing all lodging, food and beverage, retail and recreational operations for the 72-year-old resort, which includes managing the famed Roosevelt Spa.
Michael Barnes, former general manager of Niagara Falls State Park operations for Delaware North Parks & Resort, will serve as the general manager of the resort. He is responsible for overseeing operations at the resort, along with the Roosevelt Spa.
Guests can look forward to $20 million in capital improvements to the resort and bathhouse as well as an expanded menu of interpretive programs, utilizing the state parks natural landscapes as well as the hotel’s renowned history.
“One of the things we want to do is tell the story of the hotel.” Barnes said. “We are going to do that by creating interpretive boards that will not only have historic photos and graphics, but will also have a historical piece attached to it, almost like a museum style. This is going to help patrons find out the story of Gideon Putnam and the geysers and the mineral water; these are all fantastic stories inside the park.
Improvements will include upgrading furniture, fixtures and other equipment in the facility as well as improvements to the restaurants, bar and Roosevelt Spa. In addition, the company anticipates broadening its marketing efforts to appeal to its niche market by turning the property into a complete resort and spa.
“The concept is not to just go out and market this place solely as the Gideon Putnam Hotel, but as a resort, meaning we are in this park and there are so many other things you can do while staying here, from the tennis courts to the Victorian pools to SPAC to the hiking trails; this is going to be a different approach to this property.” Barnes said.
Delaware North Companies manages numerous well-known entities such as Niagara Falls State Park, Harrison Hot Springs Resort & Spa, The Plaza Grand Ballroom in New York City and The Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite National Park.
Gideon Putnam is America’s first spa resort. It was built more than 70 years ago to provide a comfortable home for visitors taking advantage of the mineral waters of Saratoga Springs running through the park. Over the years, the resort has played host to politicians, celebrities and society leaders.
