Moreau Lake State Park

Located just 18 miles north of the Gideon Putnam lies Moreau Lake State Park. This tranquil escape lies among hardwood forests, pine strands, and rocky ridges, and offers numerous picnic grounds beneath shady groves of trees. Two pavilions, each with a 20' x 30' tent and a maximum capacity of 75 people, are available and can be reserved on a daily basis. There is also a sandy beach where you can lounge during the summer, and a variety of trails for hiking in summer or cross-country skiing in winter. Rental equipment is also available.

Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site

The stately Schuyler Mansion is located approximately 35 miles south of the Gideon Putnam, in Albany, NY. This historic site was once home to the renowned Revolutionary War general, US Senator, and business entrepreneur, Philip J. Schuyler. The mansion was the site of military strategizing and political hobnobbing during the years the Schuyler family occupied the house, and daughter Elizabeth Schuyler was even married to Alexander Hamilton at the house in 1780. The mansion was actually burned down by the British after their occupation of the area, but was rebuilt after their surrender, and even includes salvaged glass, nails, locks, and hinges that were recovered from the burned site. The house does not feature running water or electricity, and appears very much the same today as when it was built. Daily tours are available for school and adult groups.

U.S. Grant Cottage State Historic Site

The U.S. Grant Cottage State Historic Site sits just 9 miles from downtown Saratoga Springs, and is the final home of Ulysses S. Grant; Civil War Commanding General, and the 18th President of the United States. Grant moved into the cottage on June 16, 1885, just weeks prior to his death on July 23 of the same year, where he wrote Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant, one of the most critically acclaimed memoirs by a US President or historic military figure. Today, visitors can tour the downstairs of the cottage where you can view the original furnishings, decorations, and personal items belonging to Grant, including the bed where he died and floral arrangements from his funeral.
